Publications linked to member type

Would love it if we were able to use the publications a little more cleverly, so that subscribing to certain publications required conditions to be met.
For example, we have a Member-only newsletter. It would be great for only members to have the option to select that subscription in their portal.
Of course we can create the custom filter that ensures people are registered to the newsletter AND are active FULL members. That's fine, but because the member-only publication subscription can't be hidden from associate member profiles, but it creates confusion as they complain about not getting the newsletter when they aren't eligible for it.
